In Purusha Pretham (Male Ghost), a character says the living and the dead have become unpredictable. It was a living being that caused much chaos in Aavasavyuham. It’s a dead body that does it in Purusha Pretham. Krishand portrays a group of characters trapped in perpetual anxiety in his new SonyLIV feature.
Krishand’s treatment of the material, however, is quite different from Aavasavyuham, even though the two films share similar visual styles. It’s a strange beast that takes some getting used to. Brace yourself for a pretty long, but understandable preoccupation with the morbid given the title, which is police parlance for a male corpse. If you’re feeling under the weather, or in the morning, this isn’t the best film to watch.
As per protocol for unidentified bodies, they bury a 50-year-old male body after three days in the local cemetery. Susanna, played by Darshana Rajendran, soon arrives claiming it’s her husband’s body. What follows after forms the crux of the movie. There is a romantic sub-plot which stands out because of how grounded in reality it is, between Sebastian and a single-mother Sujatha played by Devaki Rajendran.
Sebastian is a watchable character that is entertaining on his own, so although the film could have been shorter, that’s not too much of a problem. One negative was how little Darshana Rajendran was used and how little screen time she received. A little more build up would have been interesting for a character like her.
The story by Manu Thodupuzha, the screenplay by Ajith Haridas, and Krishand’s talent for bringing out the best result make it a visual treat. A special mention should be made of Suhail Backer’s editing.
